Crochet Pattern: Pineapple Blanket

August 06, 2019 by Laura Barnet in Craft Guides, How to

I love this pattern! It’s quite different from other blankets I’ve made where the pattern repeats every row or two. In the case of a pineapple blanket, the first repeat comes after 11 rows and compared to other patters I really needed to pay close attention to what I was doing with this one. Having said that, it did start to become clearer after the first repeat and easier again once I wrote the pattern out with my own notes and reminders. I now don't know where I got it from or quite how far I've strayed from the original but hopefully you'll find this easy to follow and will mean your first attempt will go a bit smoother too!

The first time I made a blanket with the pineapple pattern it was for a friend’s new baby who had been nicknamed piney after being told she was the size of a pineapple during the pregnancy. It seemed an appropriate pattern to make and as soon as I began to see the shapes take form I feel in love with it and have made a couple of others in different sizes and weights of yarn.

The pattern below can be adjusted to fit whatever width you require, just make sure you create a foundation row in multiples of 15 chains + one.

If you have any questions or queries about the pattern feel free to ask in the comments below or you can join the Happy Barnet Craft Challenge group in Facebook and join in our chats there.

And yes, although I am in the UK I have used US terms here. Sorry for any confusion!

Pineapple Blanket Pattern

Pineapple Crochet Blanket

Crochet terms: US

Foundation row: Crochet a multiple of 15 chains + 1

Row 1: SC into the second chain from the hook and all in all chains in the foundation row

(Note: personally I like to use the HDC foundation chain instead of the foundation chain and row 1 but this is a personal preference and is not needed if you are unfamiliar with the technique)

Row 2: Chain up 3, DC in the next two stitches , *chain 2, skip the next four stitches and then make 7DC all in to the next stitch. Chain 2, skip the next four stitches then DC into the next 6 stitches. Repeat from *until the end, finishing with 3 DCs.

Row 3: Chain up 3 and DC in the next stitch. Chain 2 and then *DC into the 7 DCs from row 2 with a chain 1 between each DC. Chain 2, skip the first DC and make 4 DCs into the middle 4 of the 6 DCs from row 2. Chain 2 and repeat from * ending with 2 DCs in the final 2 of the 3DCs from row 2.

Row 4: Chain up 3 and DC in the next stitch. Chain 2 and then *in the first chain space of the fan created in row 3, make 1 SC and chain 3, repeat in all the fan chain spaces (without making a chain 3 after the final SC). You should have made 5 loops. Chain 2, skip the first DC and make 2 DCs in the middle two of the four DCs from row 3. Chain 2 and repeat from * ending with 2 DCs.

Row 5: Chain up 3 and DC in the next stitch. Chain 2 and then *in the first 3 chain space loop created in row 4, make 1 SC and chain 3, repeat in all the 3 chain spaces (without making a chain 3 after the final SC). You should have made 4 loops. Chain 2 and make a DC in the two DCs made in row 4. Chain 2 and repeat from * ending with 2 DCs.

Row 6: Chain up 3 and make 2 DCs into the next DC. Chain 2 and then *in the first 3 chain space loop created in row 5, make 1 SC and chain 3, repeat in all the 3 chain spaces (without making a chain 3 after the final SC). You should have made 3 loops. Chain 2 and make 2 DCs in each of the the two DCs made in row 5. Chain 2 and repeat from * ending with 2 DC into the second last DC and 1 DC in the final DC.

Row 7: Chain up 3 , DC in next stitch and make 2DCs in the next stitch. Chain 2 and then *in the first 3 chain space loop created in row 6, make 1 SC and chain 3, repeat in all the 3 chain spaces (without making a chain 3 after the final SC). You should have made 2 loops. Chain 2 and make 2 DCs in the first DC, make 1 DC in the next 2 stitches and then 2 DCs in the next DC. Chain 2 and repeat from * ending with 2 DC into the third last DC, 1 DC in the final two stitches.

Row 8: Chain up 3, DC in the next two stitches and make 2 DCs in the next stitch. Chain 2 and then *in the 3 chain space loop created in row 7, make 1 SC, chain 3 and make 1 SC in the final chain space. You should have made 1 loop. Chain 2 and make 2 DCs in the first DC, make 1 DC in the next 4 stitches and then 2 DCs in the next DC. Chain 2 and repeat from * ending with 2 DC into the fourth last DC and 1 DC in the final three stitches.

Row 9: Chain up 3, DC in the next 3 stitches and make 2 DCs in the next stitch. Chain 2 and then *in the 3 chain space loop created in row 8, make 1 SC. Chain 2 and make 2 DCs in the first DC, make 1 DC in the next 6 stitches and then 2 DCs in the next DC. Chain 2 and repeat from * ending with 2 DC into the fifth last DC and 1 DC in the final four stitches.

Row 10: Chain up 3, DC in the next 4 stitches and make 2 DCs in the next stitch. Chain 2 and then *skip over the top of the fan and make 2 DCs into the first DC, DC into the next 8 DCs and then make 2 DCs in the final DC. Chain 2 and repeat from * ending with 2 DC into the sixth last DC and 1 DC in the final five stitches.

Row 11: Chain up 3, DC in the next 2 stitches, Chain 2 and * make 7 DCs into the chain space from row 10. Chain 2 and skip 4DCs. Make 2 DCs in the next stitch, Make 1 DC in each of the next two stitches and make 2 DCs in the next stitch. Chain 2 and skip four DCs. Repeat from * ending with 1 DC in each of the final three stitches.

The pattern now repeats rows 3-11 (see graphic below) until the last cycle where you will finish on row 10.

I hope you find the patter helpful and would love to see your final projects!
